The Need

Malnutrition remains a common healthcare issue despite significant advances in medical research and improvements in healthcare delivery systems. At the same time, funding has failed to meet the need for nutrition science. The ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation supports nutrition researchers throughout their careers by awarding grants for both basic science-oriented investigations aimed at improving understanding of the science of nutrient regulation in different disease states, as well as clinical and translational research to determine how the practice of nutrition can be refined and individualized to optimize clinical outcomes. The Foundation wants to increase the number and monetary level of grant support it provides each year through its endowment.

The Solution

TGC conducted a feasibility and planning study in 2016 and has since provided endowment campaign leadership and management. This was the first-ever campaign for this association foundation that had no prior development staff.

TGC provided onsite direction including setting up the office infrastructure from hiring campaign staff, recommending donor management systems, creating philanthropic policies and procedures to serving as the onsite campaign director.

The Impact

The campaign is still underway but, to date, the Foundation has increased the number of active donors by 297% and has raised nearly $1 million. In addition,it has hired development staff and is budgeting to hire an Executive Director.

  • We partnered with TGC because we wanted a firm that would take the time to learn our culture and not provide a ‘cookie-cutter’ approach. Not only was this our Foundation’s first campaign since its inception, but also it was our first real effort at fundraising. We needed counsel for a development office from the ground up including infrastructure and staff. TGC knows fundraising and they value their partnerships with their clients – the entire team really takes the time to develop programs that makes sense for your volunteers, board leadership, members and donors.
